On March 27th, we hosted a webinar introducing our most recent and exciting product: D-ID Agents. As part of the D-ID Academy, we have been hosting a series of sessions to demystify our technology and services. This webinar was unique in allowing the audience to ask us everything they wanted to know about Agents and how they will be used in their businesses.

The session was led by Ron Friedman, Head of Content and Creative at D-ID, who kicked off with a brief introduction to D-ID and our products, followed by an introduction of our panelists, Simon Kurakou, API Tech Support Engineer, Steve Ormonde, Regional Manager EMEA, and Ben Yael, Full Stack Team Lead.

To better understand D-ID Agents, Ron showed a live demo of how we created an interactive agent representing William Shakespeare in honor of World Theater Day. We even asked William to discuss contemporary cinema and compose a sonnet about AI.

RAG and API

Ben Yael joined the session to explain the technology behind D-ID Agents: Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). RAG is a key concept that leverages the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) to create customized and extendable developer experiences.

The process involves taking the knowledge documents uploaded by the user, separating them into chunks or records, and embedding each of these records into a vector DB. The user’s query is then optimized, and the top relevant records are fetched from the vector DB using a similarity search. This relevant context and information are then used to generate the answer in real-time.

RAG helps make LLMs more accurate and up-to-date. It also grounds the agent’s responses to the specific knowledge base uploaded by the user.

Simon explained the D-ID API, which is hosted in either our AWS cloud or on-prem on the user’s servers. He showed us why D-ID’s API is better because it is publicly available, quick and simple to use, supports both input and output streaming, and is always stable, scalable, and flexible.

The Uses of D-ID Agents

Steve discussed the practical application of D-ID Agents. Large corporations and businesses are starting to recognize the potential of LLMs. D-ID Agents can leverage this potential to create interactive, engaging, and personalized user experiences. He also showed how science supports that the more human-like a digital human is, the more likely customers. are to interact with it and emotionally connect to it – thereby creating brand loyalty and satisfaction.

Q&A

Finally, the team opened the floor up for questions, including “Can Agents replace the search bar on my website?” “Which markets or sectors would benefit most from Agents?” “Can the avatar look like me or anyone I want?” and “Can non-human characters be used as Agents?”

This past Valentine’s Day, D-ID embarked on an ambitious journey to demonstrate the power of generative AI in creating compelling media content without the hefty price tag of traditional production. Leveraging advanced AI tools, we crafted an engaging and interactive campaign that captured hearts and showcased the innovative potential of AI in creative industries. The campaign aimed to show our users how generative AI can truly transform their marketing strategy and how easily they can fit multi-pronged campaigns like ours into their budget. 

Campaign Overview

To kick off the campaign, we began by brainstorming ideas for an original and attention-grabbing concept. We wanted something that would resonate with our audience personally while also showcasing the capabilities of AI video. Each Valentine’s Day, consumers are overwhelmed with hundreds of emails in their inboxes and posts in their feeds about love boxes of chocolates, flowers, and more. We set out to do something different, we wanted to talk about love in a way that isn’t usually used on such a holiday – we wanted drama! After much consideration, we landed on the idea of creating a romantic soap opera between two digital humans. 

The Challenge

Many in the digital marketing industry face the dilemma of the high cost and resource intensity of producing captivating video content. Traditional methods require a team of writers, artists, actors, and editors, not to mention the logistical and financial burdens of shooting and post-production. These costs can dramatically change depending on the length of the video and how intricately detailed it is – including additions like animation. Therefore, a promotional video can range between $3,000 to $30,000 and much more. D-ID aimed to address these challenges by producing a Valentine’s Day campaign that was not only engaging and romantic but also cost-effective, utilizing the latest in AI-driven content creation. We only had two on-staff writers, one idea, and the world of Generative AI. Challenge accepted.

How D-ID Solved It

The creation of our Valentine’s Day campaign was a testament to the capabilities of generative AI. We started with character creation in Leonardo.ai, a free image creation tool that uses generative AI to create images on demand, where AI brought to life the protagonists of our soap opera, Emily and Alex. Next, we asked OpenAI’s ChatGPT 4 for help writing a compelling script about a romantic relationship, infusing drama and emotion into the storyline. Our prompt was simply “Write me a 1-minute daytime soap drama about a romantic relationship between two characters.”

Our speaking AI avatars, crafted in D-ID’s Creative Reality™ Studio, added depth and realism to the characters, providing a voice and personality that resonated with viewers. We simply uploaded each character’s image and script into the Studio, chose a voice and accent that resonated with the character’s persona, and clicked generate. Note: You can also have AI write a script within the Studio using a similar prompt to the one mentioned above. Canva‘s comprehensive toolkit facilitated the production process, allowing us to assemble the final video with ease. We integrated our speaking avatars, selected fitting music, and chose the appropriate background from Canva’s extensive database to set the perfect scene. This step required manual editing and attention to detail. Still, it did not require previous expertise in any video editing software, so could have been done by anyone on staff with enough patience.

Taking Things to the Next Level

Finally, the campaign’s pièce de résistance was embodied by Emily, a D-ID Agent created within our Studio platform. She was not just a character but an interactive entity, capable of engaging with the audience through a human-like AI chatbot, using information and responses derived from meticulously compiled source material. Emily the agent knew everything about the character from the video, down to her feelings for Alex, their relationship troubles, and the investigative work that her character alludes to in the video. The goal of this aspect of the campaign was to bring the characters to life, taking the video to the next level and creating an unprecedented interactive journey. 

Using generative and conversational AI, we were able to seamlessly integrate multiple platforms to create an inexpensive marketing campaign that did not require external vendors.

Impact and Achievements

The campaign was posted organically on D-ID’s social media accounts: LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. It garnered extensive engagement across these various platforms. Viewers were captivated by the innovative use of AI to create a genuinely entertaining and interactive experience. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the use of AI to do all the heavy lifting. The campaign not only achieved its goal of demonstrating the potential of AI in reducing production costs – our total cost for this campaign was $0 –  but also set a new standard for creativity and innovation in marketing.

In addition to thousands of video views on a day saturated with holiday-themed content, hundreds of users initiated a conversation with Emily’s interactive avatar, answering an average of 4.3 questions per user. Interesting note: Two weeks after the Valentine’s Day launch, we shared Emily the Agent in our monthly newsletter, inviting people to chat with her to their heart’s content, leading to a second significant spike in usage. Our marketing campaign successfully used another channel to get our message across, and the response was amazing!

D-ID’s Valentine’s Day campaign epitomized the transformative potential of generative AI in the creative and marketing industries. By effectively leveraging AI tools, D-ID demonstrated that it is possible to create high-quality, engaging, and interactive content without the traditional costs and resources. This campaign marks the way for future endeavors, highlighting the endless possibilities when technology and creativity converge, and setting a new benchmark for innovative, cost-effective marketing strategies in the digital age of AI avatars.

On January 23rd, 2024, D-ID hosted an artificial intelligence webinar titled “Evolving Human-AI Collaboration: Unveiling the Power of Natural User Interface (NUI),” focusing on the evolution of user Interfaces and the rapidly advancing realm of conversational and generative AI. The event was moderated by Ron Friedman, Head of Content and Creative Marketing at D-ID, featuring insights from Tomer Zuker, VP of Marketing, and Matthew Kershaw, VP of Commercial Strategy. 

Tomer introduced the concept of NUI and provided a historical overview of the evolution of User Interfaces, starting with Textual User Interfaces (TUI) – a relatively complex computing form that required users to input proper code and syntax when communicating with the computer. He continued with the transition to Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) with the introduction of a mouse and operating systems, like Windows, becoming the norm. Now, we are witnessing a revolutionary shift towards Natural User Interfaces (NUI), which are more intuitive, efficient, and aligned with human communications. The objective of NUI is to minimize the learning curve and enhance the experience between humans and technology. D-ID: Can you tell us about the journey of this product from concept to market?

Cassius D’Helon (CD): Agents transformed from a concept into a market-ready product in a remarkably short timeframe of 3 months through a highly focused and intense process. This journey was fueled by a robust vision, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic decision-making. The concept sprang to life by identifying a market gap for a face-first conversational AI video platform that can deliver a natural and engaging user experience across a broad spectrum of use cases. With a clear vision in mind, I defined the core features, emphasizing natural interaction, user customization, and adaptability to diverse scenarios.

The collaboration among developers, designers, and NLP specialists was pivotal as they worked together to ensure that the technical and design aspects of the product seamlessly complemented each other. Embracing an agile development approach, the team rapidly iterated on prototypes, incorporating valuable user feedback and making swift adjustments. Key features were strategically prioritized, leading to the creation of a functional MVP within the ambitious three-month timeframe.

Rigorous testing was done with a select group of users to collect initial feedback on usability, avatar interactions, and customization features. Guided by user insights, the team embarked on an iterative refinement process for the Agents platform, which involved addressing usability issues, elevating avatar responses, and enriching customization options to align with user preferences.

D-ID: What sets this product apart from its competitors in the market?

Cassius: Agents stand out with their high-quality natural AI avatars and extensive customization options. Users can personalize these agents in appearance, role, and knowledge base, offering a unique user experience unlike any other in the market. 

D-ID: How does this product align with the current trends and future directions in AI technology?

Cassius: Agents is at the forefront of the trend towards voice-first applications that rely on conversational interactions. We are entering a new market with the addition of photorealistic avatars and anticipate rapid adoption once the world learns of these capabilities.

D-ID: How do you envision this product impacting its industry or consumer behavior?

Cassius: I aim to set the highest quality standard for natural conversational experiences. A Natural User Interface (NUI) requires that agents adapt to human communication patterns rather than forcing users to conform to rigid computer systems. This approach will transform the way consumers engage with technology.

Identifying the Ideal User

D-ID: Who is the ideal user for this product, and how does it cater to their specific needs?

Cassius: Currently, the ideal user for Agents is still being defined. Our beta release is a discovery phase, where we’ll learn about the types of agents users create and how they meet specific needs. We have some assumptions, but like in other D-ID projects expect to be surprised by our users’ ingenuity and creativity.

Technical Challenges and Solutions

D-ID: What were the major technical hurdles in developing this product, and how were they overcome?

Cassius: One major challenge was minimizing response time for near real-time interaction. Our development team focused on streaming video and audio efficiently. We’re continually exploring innovative approaches to be implemented in future product iterations to close the gap with natural response times.

D-ID: Can you describe a feature you’re particularly proud of and the thought process behind it?

Cassius: I’m particularly proud of our use of RAG (retrieval augmented generation) to build a knowledge base from user documents, which is stored in a vector db. This feature ensures the model accesses recent or exclusive information, significantly reducing hallucinations common in LLMs.

Future Plans: Enhancing Agent Interactions

D-ID: What are the plans for future updates or iterations of the product?

Cassius: Future updates will introduce multi-modal interactions with agents, moving towards agents that seamlessly integrate with users’ needs.

Advice for Aspiring Product Managers

D-ID: What advice would you give to aspiring product managers who want to bring successful tech products to market?

Cassius: Dream big, stay lean, and continuously learn and adapt as you build. It’s the key to bringing successful tech products to the market.
